Fishing in Western Australia

Freshwater fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout in Western Australia was made possible in the South West of Western Australia after successful stockings from 1936 onwards.

The Pemberton Trout Hatchery breeds thousands of fish each year that are used by the Department of Fisheries  to stock the popular dams, streams and rivers in the South West. Private stock are also bought to stock numerous farm dams, providing water in these dams is deep enough to stay below 20 degrees Celsius during a hot summer.

Before you go fishing in WA it is important that you obtain a freshwater angling license from a local post office or the Department of Fisheries. Please check the rules as several waters are closed to fishing at all times due to water catchment requirements, others are closed for the winter to allow Trout to spawn, but reopen to provide excellent fishing in the spring and autumn. There are bag and size limits, this information is provided in brochures obtained from a local post office or the Department of Fisheries.
